Dedication and Other Symbols

This weekend marks the day that we will have a baby dedication at our church. I have always wondered about this, especially since we are Southern Baptist by choice. As grandparents and all come in, I wonder what is so big about these services? It's not like we are just now handing little Drew over to the Lord. We did that when we realized he was coming.

What I've come to realize is that there are just some things that happen for other people. Baby dedication, baptism, and others are symbols that tell about what has already taken place. Baby dedcation - parents handing their child back to the Lord and vowing to raise them in a God-honoring way. Baptism - shows that one has trusted in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and also they,ve been given a new life because of this decision.
Sometimes we may not understand why somethings happen. This doesn't mean that they don't need to happen.
